  • Why do my lights flicker?

In many cases, lights flicker because of an outdated electrical system. If this is the case, your electrical panel or wiring will need to be replaced. In other cases, it can be a loose wire, insufficient power supply, or another appliance on a circuit drawing too much power. Regardless, it is best to have the problem inspected by a licensed electrician at Bayard Electric LLC.

  • How can I save electrical energy?

There are many ways you can save electrical energy at home, such as turning off appliances and lights when not in use. In fact, according to Attainable Home, roughly 15% of the average household’s electricity consumption comes from lighting. Devices such as timers and automated controls can assist in efficiently utilizing power ONLY when you need it. Call us today if you're in need of an electrician!

  • How do electricians diagnose electrical problems?

Electricians use many different methods to identify problems within your home's wiring system that cause appliances not to work properly. Electrical problems can be identified through the use of electrical testing devices. Electrical testing devices can help identify any issues with wiring, grounding, and breakers. Electrical testers come in many different shapes and sizes depending on what type you are using them for.

  • How do you know when your home needs new wiring or additional circuits?

Electrical needs arise in homes for many reasons. A new home may need additional wiring or more outlets to accommodate the electrical demands of modern appliances. An older home might need new circuits installed because it has outgrown its current circuit capacity. No matter why you think your house may be suffering from a lack of electric supply, installing more circuits is the best way to ensure your appliances are getting the power they need. If you have questions for an electrician, give us a call today!

  • Why is my light switch hot?

If you go to turn off your light switch and find that it is hot to the touch, this is indicative of a serious issue that could lead to an electrical fire. Possible reasons for this include the switch being overloaded, the switch failing, or faulty wiring. In any case, you should address the problem immediately and call an electrician as soon as possible.

  • Is there a difference between a fuse and a circuit breaker?

A fuse and a circuit breaker both perform the same function of disrupting the flow of electricity when a fault is sensed. The only difference is that a fuse will have to be replaced once it has tripped, whereas a circuit breaker won’t need replacement. Due to this, circuit breakers are more common. When in doubt, call your local electrician for more information!

  • What is the difference between a GFCI receptacle and a standard receptacle?

A GFCI receptacle, otherwise known as a ground-fault circuit interrupter, is designed specifically to protect against electric shock by monitoring the electrical current. If there is any imbalance, the GFCI receptacle will detect it and shut off the power to prevent electrical shocks from occurring. You should have a GFCI receptacle installed in any area of your home or business where there is water. These include bathrooms, kitchens, basements, or outdoor areas.

By comparison, a standard receptacle does not have this feature. This makes standard outlets more susceptible to electrical shock. For more information, call us if you need some trusted electricians today.

  • What is the life expectancy of electrical equipment?

Panels, meter enclosures, disconnects, and other equipment have about a 30-year life span before consideration needs to be made for replacement. Often a "proactive vs reactive" approach, when equipment is of age, it is time to plan for the future. Other life safety devices such as GFCI receptacles and smoke detectors have a shorter range of life at around the 10-years. If you're in need of electricians, give us a call today!
